Many congratulations to Ealing who beat Blackheath by six wickets in the Final of the Challenge Trophy held at the Brit Oval on Sunday 16 th September.

Blackheath's total of 222 all out was mainly supplied by a very solid middle order partnership between Peter Dean who made 64 and Paul Frith 61. The Ealing bowling honours went to Chris Peploe 4-39 and Simon Hawk 3-26 both remarkably good figures on a very flat Oval pitch. The Blackheath score always looked well under par in the conditions and Ealing's vigorous opening partnership of Simon Hawk and Sameer Patel made short work of the Blackheath opening attack. Patel's 61 from a mere 11 overs won him the Man of the Match Award as Ealing romped home with almost 9 overs to spare.

The Challenge Trophy was presented to Ealing captain Luke Stoughton by Simon Dyson the Finance Director of Associated Newspapers who helped found the Tournament back in 1992.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1991 a meeting was held at London's Cafe Royal, home of the National Sporting Club, attended by thirty of London's top cricket clubs. In the discussion which took place it was clear that Saturday cricket was pretty much sorted with the proliferation of leagues which have emerged over the past twenty five years or so. The missing piece was a top notch Sunday knockout Tournament which would pitch the best London clubs against each other in a 50 over a side format. Ideally the Tournament would have big prize money and a prestige venue for the Final.

A proposal was then sent by David Willis of the National Sporting Club to Simon Dyson, the Finance Director of the Evening Standard inviting the newspaper to sponsor a new Tournament with prize money and a Final at the Kennington Oval. This was all agreed and in 1992 the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy was launched with the best 64 teams within the M25 motorway invited to take part.

Despite a dismally wet day at the Oval for the Final which saw Teddington defeat Fives and Heronians, the Tournament was deemed to be a great success and the following year it was expanded to 96 clubs- some drawn from outside the M25.
